Fieldtrip to Salaulim Dam and Water Treatment Plant.
As part of the Students Induction Programme, the First-Year Civil Engineering students were taken on an educational visit to the Salaulim Dam and Water Treatment Plant. The visit was organized to provide students with practical exposure to important concepts related to water resources engineering, dam structures, water storage, water treatment, and public water supply systems.
During the visit, students observed various components and associated structures of the dam and were introduced to concepts such as reservoir storage, inflow and outflow, spillway arrangements, irrigation systems, reservoir management, and dam safety. Particular attention was given to the functioning of the spillway and the importance of safely managing excess water during periods of heavy rainfall. The visit helped students relate theoretical concepts from Water Resources Engineering and Hydrology to actual field conditions.
The students subsequently visited the Water Treatment Plant located near Salaulim Dam. They were introduced to the various stages involved in converting raw water into water suitable for public supply. The treatment processes explained during the visit included coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Students also learned about the importance of monitoring water quality and maintaining appropriate treatment standards before the treated water is distributed to consumers.
