REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO OPTEL VISION, VERNA & BOSCH PACKAGING UNIT, VERNA
With an objective of providing the students an insight vis-à-vis internal working of companies, the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, organized an industrial visit for the students of Final Year, on 30th August 2018 to two companies at Verna Industrial Estate. The students visited OPTEL VISION, in the morning session, followed by visit to BOSCH in the afternoon session. The students were accompanied by faculty members, Prof. Deron Rodrigues, Prof. Samantha Cardoso and Prof. Mohini Naik.
A) OPTEL VISION, VERNA
At OPTEL VISION, through a brief presentation the HR manager, Mr. Arun Fijardo briefed students about the origin, vision and mission of the OPTEL Group, saying that it is a multinational, leading global provider of traceability systems which uses its innovative technologies to create a better world. Its prominent solutions ensure that quality of consumer pharmaceuticals and medical products by eliminating counterfeiting of such products throughout the world. OPTEL is also adapting its technologies to provide End-To-End Traceability Solution for other sectors such as Food and Beverage Industry, smart manufacturing and natural resources such as cocoa, coffee, cotton, palm oil, nuts and minerals, etc. to enhance supply chain visibility and transparency.
The students were clustered into 5 groups and taken on a promenade to the shop floor and office. They got an opportunity to interact with Mr. Yadnesh Sanzgiri and other project managers and understand the processes and techniques used in the company for ensuring track and trace via Serialization and Aggregation. The operation of different machinery used to perform these tasks was demonstrated. Students saw the working of the machine used to provide the serialisation to the bottles or boxes which help in tracking and tracing them at various levels.
B) BOSCH PACKAGING UNIT, VERNA
In the afternoon session, the students visited BOSCH, wherein the HR Manager, Mr. Derek D’Souza welcomed the students and provided a brief overview of Bosch Packaging Technology unit in Verna, Goa, which intends to meet the increasing demand of India’s fast growing packaging market as well as international markets. Along with global expertise, Bosch Packaging Technology offers tailor-made packaging solutions for the Indian market, he added. Then, the students were divided into 2 groups and taken on a tour of the entire industry, right from the stores to the manufacturing unit.
The operation of various form, fill and seal machines such as designed and manufactured by BOSCH for flexible pouch packing and flow wrap machines for pillow packed candies, cookies and other applications, was demonstrated. Mr. Gaunkar explained the difference between the vertical form seal machines and horizontal form seal machines. A brief idea about the upcoming machinery as per the costumer requirement and the temperature specifications required during the packing of the products was given to the students.
The industrial visit was organized by Department Field-visit Coordinator, Prof. Kimberly Morais. All in all, the industrial visit was a good learning experience for the students as it helped to combine theoretical knowledge with practical knowledge and opened the Industrial realities to the students.
