FE STUDENTS ORIENTATION 2019
As mandated by the AICTE Model Curriculum from the current academic year 2019-20, Don Bosco College of Engineering-Fatorda, is conducting a two-week orientation programme for the newly inducted first year engineering students. The schedule is meticulously prepared keeping in mind the norms and recommendations set in the model curriculum.
Day 1 (1st July 2019)
The students were divided as per their branch (Mechanical, ETC, Computer & Civil) and the sessions were conducted separately at four different venues.
In the morning session, the Mechanical and Civil engineering students were addressed by the Director- Fr. Kinley D’Cruz and Principal- Dr. Neena Panandikar. The Director briefed them about the inception of the college and gave general instructions on discipline and overall behaviour in the institution. The Principal brought to the students awareness the various activities and achievements of the college.
The ETC and Computer engineering students were addressed by Fr. Austin Fernandes and Prof. Roseline Fernandes. Fr. Austin conducted a session on values and Prof. Roseline Fernandes delivered a talk on career options.
In the afternoon session, all the four branches were engaged in ice-breakers and talent search activities.
Day 2 (2nd July 2019)
In the morning session, the ETC and Computer engineering students were addressed by the Director- Fr. Kinley D’Cruz and Principal- Dr. Neena Panandikar .The Civil and Mechanical engineering students were engaged by Fr. Austin Fernandes and Prof. Roseline Fernandes on values and career options respectively.
In the afternoon session, the students were addressed by faculty from their respective branch on “The Role of Engineers in Society & Industry”
This was followed by a session delivered by the heads of respective departments on Vision, Mission and Accreditation.
Day 3 (3rd July 2019)
The day started in the morning by a session on input of Syllabus & Examination Process delivered by Prof. Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar & HOD of Department of Science & Humanities.
This was followed by an interactive session with the senior students & alumni of respective departments.
In the afternoon, the students were given an insight into all the activities through parallel sessions on Cultural, Sports, NSS, E-cell, IEEE, SEEDS, Satellite Club, FSAI and the respective department Associations.
Day 4 (4th July 2019)
Students of all the four branches had a workshop on Communication Skills conducted by Prof, Steefni Cruz and Prof. Jyoti Lewis.
The Librarian- Mr. Roland D’Cruz , then briefed the students on Library facilities & the availability of e-books .
Fun sports and talent activities were conducted in the afternoon session.
Day 5 (5th July 2019)
Students were taken on a field visit to the Naval Aviation Museum at Dabolim. The students had the opportunity to see the decommissioned fighter aircrafts, helicopters and civilian aircrafts used by the Indian Air force and Navy from independence to current day. Altogether 13 aircrafts were on display, some of which were the only existing examples in the world.
The students were then taken to the National Centre for Polar & Ocean Research (NCPOR) at Vasco. Here the students interacted with Dr. M.V. Ramesh, Research Associate & Co-coordinator, Education & Outreach. Dr. Ramesh enlightened the students about the various activities & expeditions carried out by NCPOR and the role engineers have to play in the same. Students were then taken around the facility.
Day 6 (8th July 2019)
The first day of the second week of the orientation programme began with a session on “Attitude & Teamwork” given by Mr. Ramchandra Prabhu Salgaonkar, Founder, Amaze Warriors. Through his interactive audio-visual session Mr. Salgaonkar highlighted the importance of having a positive attitude and the essentials of working in a team. This was followed by a session on Placements , Training & NPTEL online courses by TPO Prof. Roseline Fernandes. In the afternoon session, Prof. Grebian Alemao, Counsellor, explained the mentoring process, its importance and modalities.
Prof. Maya Linn Noronha, Counsellor, then gave a session on Time management and studying tips.
Day 7 (9th July 2019)
The day started with a lively and interactive session on Meditation & Yoga conducted by Mr. Vishvanath Swar from MES HSS, Zuarinagar. Mr. Swar demonstrated various breathing & meditative exercises and explained their importance to relieve stress and increase concentration.
This was followed by a workshop on Vedic Mathematics conducted by Mr. Sagar Sakordekar, Director, SRS Vedic Mathematics Academy, Ponda. Mr. Sakordekar showed with examples how problems of multiplication can be done easily using rules of Vedic Mathematics. The workshop was well enjoyed by all the FE students.
In the afternoon session Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar made the students aware of the various Scholarships they can avail of for payment of their fees. Prof. Gladys D’Silva then briefly explained the UGC Anti-Ragging Act and the penalties imposed for the offence of ragging.
The final session was on Innovative Projects. Faculty from respective branches showed and explained to the students the various innovative projects done by the previous batches of BE students and also the possible future projects in the respective fields.
Day 8 (10th July 2019)
The first session of the day was on “Positive & Healthy Mind” delivered by Dr. Aldina Braganza, Associate Professor of Psycology, Carmel College, Nuvem. Through her interactive session and lively examples Dr. Braganza brought out the importance of thinking positively to succeed in life.
The next session was on “Health & Nutrition” delivered by Ms. Sheina Paula Pereira Costa, Health Educator, Manovikas English medium school. Through her presentation Ms. Sheina highlighted the importance of a balanced diet for a healthy living.ions Manager, FIIRE, explained to the students the concept of business idea incubation and the start-up incubation process being followed at the Forum for Innovation Incubation Research & Entrepreneurship (FIIRE).
This was followed by a session on “Cyber Crime” by Inspector Mallikarjun Mali, Cyber Forensic Expert, Cyber Crime Cell, Ribandar and a session on “Drug Abuse” by PSI Manjunath, Anti-Narcotics Cell, Panjim. Both these police personnel explained to the students the meaning of cyber crime and drug abuse and how not to fall prey to the same.
Day 9 (11th July 2019)
A scientific calculator is an essential tool for every engineering student and it is equally important to know the proper use of its various functions. Keeping this in mind, a hands-on workshop on the use of scientific calculator was conducted for the FE students in the morning session by Prof. Melba D’souza , Prof. Yeshudas Muttu, Dr. Kala Nayak & Prof. Chetan Gaonkar.
This was followed by a session on “Constitution of India” delivered by Mr. Sumeet Naik, Journalist. Through his session, Mr. Naik emphasised on the Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles described in the constitution.
In the afternoon session, faculty from respective departments gave information about their department and laboratories and then took the students for a tour of the college showing them their classrooms, workshops, laboratories and the FIIRE campus.
Day 10 (12th July 2019)
In the morning session students of all the branches were made to assemble in the auditorium and various activities were conducted to help the students showcase their talents.
This was followed by a very inspiring talk on “Leadership Development” by Dr. Dayanand Rao, Gynaecology Department, GMC. In his session Dr. Rao encouraged students to follow their passion and give in their best towards it, not to be bogged down with failures but to accept them as challenges and grow in life.
In the afternoon session the students formed groups and gave their feedback of the two-week orientation program in the form of power point and video presentations.
Day 11 (13th July 2019)
Orientation for parents of FE students
An orientation programme was conducted for the parents of the FE students on 13th July 2019 in the college auditorium. As the parents came in they were welcomed and registered by the respective class teachers.
The orientation began with an address by the Director-Rev. Fr. Kinley D’Cruz, wherein he briefly explained the history of Don Bosco and the various Don Bosco institutes. Fr. Kinley D’cruz also told the parents about the rules & discipline expected from the students in the institute.
Dr. Neena Panandikar, Principal, gave an overview of the various activities being held at Don Bosco College of Engineering and highlighted the progress of the college over the recent years.
Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar, then introduced the class teachers and the faculty who will be teaching the FE students. She also informed the parents about the FE scheme of instructions of the 1st & 2nd semester as per the newly introduced AICTE model curriculum. Further, Dr. Nayak briefed the parents about the various scholarships which the students can avail of.
This was followed by the Heads of the Science & Humanities, Mechanical, Civil, ETC and Computer Engineering Departments highlighting the activities and achievements of their respective departments.
Prof. Roseline Fernandes, TPO, gave a report of the placement drives and the status of students placed over the recent years.
The orientation concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Jyoti Lewis.
The parents were then taken around the campus and shown the various labs, workshops, classrooms, etc.
