Workshop on Industrial Product Development

A One Day Workshop on Industrial Product Development was organized by Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, Goa Chapter in association with Department of Mechanical Engineering, Goa College of Engineering, Farmagudi on 16th October 2018. The workshop was attended by Prof. Suraj Marathe , Prof. Swapnil Ramani and Prof. Sanjeel Naik from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Suraj Rane, Professor , Department of Mechanical Engineering ,GEC.
The workshop gave an insight into the issues and challenges faced by industries and also the technology used for developing new products and their execution. The workshop was divided into 4 sessions focusing on areas of 3D printing , Multidisciplinary Innovative Design Approaches , Product development in consumer durable industry and development of pumps. The 1st session on “3D Printing Applications” was delivered by Mr. Ravikumar Patil and Mr. Mahesh Kothawale from Design Tech System Ltd. They discussed the role of 3D printing in prototype development which leads to product development in industry. They explained in depth 3D printing technologies like FDM, Polyjet, Wax 3D printing and Metal 3D printing through case studies from companies like Hyundai, BMW,IFB , Parker Hannifin filters, Adidas, Porsche etc.3D printing applications in manufacturing, Biomedical ,Tool manufacturing and also machine part manufacturing were covered in detail by the speakers .This was followed by by a Session on “Looking Sideways to get ahead: A multidisciplinary Design Journey” by Mr. Deepak Patahania, Founder and creative Director, Design Intervention pvt. Ltd Goa .Mr. Pathania shared with the participants his design journey and the innovation involved in product development by sharing case studies of republic day float, ICICI vault, multipurpose exercise machine AB TAB and so on. The afternoon sessions started with Mr. Mayur Nadkarni, General Manager-Design & Technology ,Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals, Bethora Goa explained about the various stages in product life cycle , Product gap analysis, consumer needs identification ,synthesis and analysis of user needs , marketing and selling. He also enlightened the participants on why many new products fail and what it takes to make a new product successful by giving example of Crompton ancer fan. The last session of the day was conducted by Mr. Nikhil Naik ,Design Manager- Netzsch Technologies Manufacturing which was on project execution of pumps in which the areas of types of pumps ,pump design datatsheet, flowchart of project execution ,performance curves and standards ,mechanical testing of pumps ,Painting & storage were discussed. He ended the talk by giving a case study of site installation of pumps in Oil rigs in the middle east.
The workshop was attended by industry professionals and faculty members from engineering and polytechnic colleges. The faculties had enriching experience at the workshop and also had informative interactions with the resource persons.
