Orientation Program on “Outcome Based Education” for Newly Appointed Teaching Faculty

The Teaching, Learning, and Educational Technology (TLET) committee at Don Bosco College of Engineering (DBCE), Fatorda- Goa was established to enhance the educational experience through innovative teaching methodology and the integration of new technology. TLET committee focuses on fostering effective learning environment and continuous professional development. It aims to support both instructors and students in adapting to the evolving educational landscape. By leveraging advanced educational tools and techniques, the TLET committee strives to elevate the overall academic excellence of our institution.

As part of this endeavour, an orientation program by TLET was organised, on Outcome Based Education (OBE) for five newly appointed teaching faculty on July 05, 2024. The session was facilitated by two distinguished resource persons, Mr. Ajit Salunke, and Ms. Christina Baretto, both of whom are NBA coordinators of the Mechanical and Computer Department respectively.

The primary objectives of the orientation program were:

  • To introduce newly appointed faculty to the principles and practices of Outcome Based Education.
  • To equip faculty with the skills necessary to design curriculum and assessments aligned with OBE.
  • To foster an understanding of the importance of student-centred learning and measurable outcomes.

Dr. Amrita Naik, TLET chairperson of DBCE, welcomed the resource persons and participants after which the session was handed to Mr. Ajit Salunke, who delivered an insightful presentation on the fundamentals of OBE. He highlighted the need on achieving specific learning outcome. He emphasized the importance of PO’s, PEO’s and PSO’s and their relevance in OBE. He also touched upon the Bloom’s Taxonomy framework and its usage in evaluation methods. Ms. Baretto’s session centred on practical aspects of course design and assessment in an OBE framework. She provided a step-by-step guide on developing course outcome that align with desired learning outcome. She also detailed out the documentation aspects of maintaining records in the form of course-files. She urged the participants to be part of the existing peer support network to facilitate ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing among faculty members.

The program concluded with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to seek clarification on various aspects of OBE. Both resource persons provided detailed answers and shared resources for further reference.

Dr. Amrita then delivered the vote of thanks and presented appreciation tokens to the resource persons.

Overall, the session was a resounding success, and the participants expressed confidence in applying the necessary tools to implement OBE effectively.
