REPORT OF FE STUDENT INDUCTION PROGRAM 2023-24
As mandated by the AICTE Model Curriculum (RC 2019-20), the Department of Science & Humanities – Don Bosco College of Engineering conducted a Student Induction Program (SIP) for the newly inducted first year engineering students from August 7-12, 2023. The Induction Programme was co-ordinated by Institute Induction Programme Cell (IIPC) members Mr. Harison Cota & Ms. Vaishali Parakhi under the leadership of Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar & HOD, Department of Science & Humanities. The schedule of the programme was meticulously prepared keeping in mind the norms and recommendations set in the model curriculum.
Day 1 (7th August 2023)
In the morning session the students of Mechanical & Civil engineering were welcomed and addressed by the Director, Fr. Kinley D’Cruz, while in a parallel session the Rector Fr. Ralin De Souza delivered a session on “The Don Bosco Spirit” to the ECS & Computer Engineering students. The Director briefed them about the inception of the college and gave general instructions on discipline and overall behaviour in the institution. He said “We want your four years stay here at DBCE to be a happy and memorable one”.
Fr. Ralin in his session talked about the Preventive system of Don Bosco’s education which he said “is based on three pillars: Reason, Religion & Loving Kindness”.
In the next common session, Principal, Dr. Neena Panandikar gave a general overview of the various activities and achievements of the college. She solicited the support of the students saying “You are our important stakeholders, contribute and help us grow.”
In the afternoon session, all the students were engaged in fun & talent search activities by the counsellors Ms. Elaine Dias & Ms. Mancia Lobo.
Day 2 (8th August 2023)
In the first session , Fr. Kinley D’Cruz welcomed the ECS & Computer Engineering students, while Rector Fr. Ralin De Souza engaged the Civil & Mechanical Engineering students.
CEO & Co-founder, Bodhami, Mr. Damodar Pai Patnekar addressed students regarding “Career Options After Engineering & How Can Engineers Stand Out in 21st Century”. He also detailed some activities for students to highlight the importance of skills like problem solving, visual perception, financial / numerical ability, memory, creativity etc.
In the afternoon session, the students were addressed by faculty from their respective branch on “Role of Engineers in Society & Industry”.
The students were also given an insight into the NSS activities by Mr. Harison Cota and IEEE activities by Mr.Yeshudas Muttu.
Day 3 (9th August 2023)
The day started with a session by the Heads of the respective Departments on Vision, Mission, Accreditation and the various activities and student Associations / Chapters in the respective Department.
In the next hour, there was a session on Syllabus, Examination and Grading System by Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar & HOD of Department of Science & Humanities. She also briefed the students about various Scholarships they can avail of, and introduced the students to the Science & Humanities department and the faculty who would be teaching them in the first semester.
This was followed by educating students about Anti-Ragging information & Affidavit, CII-IWN, IIC, E-Cell activities by the respective Coordinators.
In the afternoon session, all the students were engaged in fun & talent search activities by the counsellors Ms. Elaine Dias & Ms. Mancia Lobo.
Day 4 (10th August 2023)
Students of all the four branches had workshop on Communication Skills conducted by Ms. Carol Cardozo. In the workshop, the students learnt the importance of digital communication and were trained in basic e-mail writing skills.
In the next session faculty from respective branches showed and explained the students the various “Innovative Projects” done by the previous batches of BE students and also the possible future projects in the respective fields.
This was followed by a photo session of the students along with the respective class teacher and Dr. Kala Nayak, HOD of Department of Science & Humanities.
In the afternoon the students were given an insight into the Cultural activities, SEEDS, Satellite Club and FSAI activities by the respective Coordinators.
Day 5 (11th August 2023)
The day began with a session on NPTEL MOOC courses and the certification by Dr. D.S. Vidhya in which she explained about how to enrol for NPTEL courses, how to fill examination forms, timeline for 2023-24 examinations. Students were given idea regarding NPTEL Certificates, fee waiver benefit for SC, ST and low-income students. The importance of domain courses, mentor, NPTEL Stars was also highlighted. Students were made aware that the lecture notes of some courses are also available in regional languages.
In the next hour, the students interacted with the seniors & alumni of the college who shared with them their experiences, success & failure stories.
In the afternoon, the students were given an orientation on the use of Library & e-books by the Librarian Mr. Roland D’Cruz & Library Assistant Ms. Vanessa Fernandes.
Next a session on “FIIRE” was given by Mr. Kiraan Mehta, head – incubation and innovation, FIIRE, wherein he explained the process of Business Idea Startup and Incubation and how a small idea can grow into a successful business model with the support of FIIRE.
In the afternoon, faculty from respective departments gave information about their department and laboratories and then took the students for a tour of the college showing them their classrooms, workshops, laboratories and the FIIRE campus.
Day 6 (12th August 2023) Orientation for parents of FE students
The Parents orientation was conducted in the college auditorium. Parents were welcomed and addressed by the Director, Fr. Kinley D’Cruz, The Director briefed them about the inception of the college and gave general instructions on discipline and overall behaviour in the Institution. In the next session, Principal, Dr. Neena Panandikar gave a general overview of the various activities and achievements of the college.
After the tea break there was a session on Syllabus, Examination and Grading System by Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar & HOD of Department of Science & Humanities. The Training & Placement officer Ms. Avila Naik along with the department placement co-ordinators gave an overview of the placement process within each Department along with the career options available to engineering graduates including higher studies and becoming entrepreneurs.
The meeting concluded with a campus tour for parents by faculty from respective Departments
