Report on 2 Days Webinar on Introduction to 3D Printing

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Don Bosco College of Engineering has organized 2 days webinar on “Introduction to 3D printing” on  August 7-8, 2020 The resource persons were Dr. Raghavendra Krishna – Associate Professor, Jyothy Institute of Technology Bengaluru, Prof. Ajit Salunke- Associate Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Goa, Dr. Ganesh Chate – Assistant Professor, KLS Gogte Institute of Technology, Belgavi, Mr. Ryan Vaz. The webinar was attended by academicians, industry professionals, and students from engineering, pharmacy, dental and medical fields. The event began with the message from the Institute Director -Rev. Fr. Kinley D’Cruz and Principal- Dr. Neena Panandikar.

Day 1: The first session was delivered by Dr. Raghavendra Krishna on introduction to 3D printing and its relevance to industry 4.0. He explained the need for 3D printing technology with respect to Industry 4.0. He continued the session by explaining the basic concepts and different technology associated with 3D printing. He also explained the various materials that can be processed using 3D printing technology. He described in detail, about the procedure adopted in 3D printing.

The second session was delivered by Mr. Ryan Vaz. He gave a detailed description about working of 3d printing in industry. He explained the various technologies adopted in current industry scenario. He highlighted on the business opportunities available with respect to 3d printing in the state of Goa as well as in India,

The third session was delivered by Dr. Ganesh Chate. He explained in detail about optimization of process parameters of 3D printing. He also explained the importance as well as advantage of using design of experiment for 3D printing technology.

Day2: The first session was delivered by Dr. Raghavendra Krishna on the various application of 3D printing in health care industry. The various technologies and materials that are used in the medical field was explained.. The various applications including medical device, implants, surgical tooling were explained in detail along with the procedure followed for patient treatment in medical field.

The second session was delivered by Prof Ajit Salunke who mainly focused on application of    3D printing in pharmaceutical industry and bio printing. He explained the adoption of 3D printing technology in pharmaceutical industry. He highlighted the various challenges and opportunities that are available with respect to application of 3D printing in pharmaceutical industry. He continued the session with explaining about bio-printing and the various researches taking place in this field. He also showed many videos of 3D printing of drugs and human organs.

The final session of the webinar was delivered by Dr. Ganesh Chate on rapid tooling. He explained the process of rapid tooling using the example of sand casting. He heightened advantages of rapid tooling in manufacturing industry.

The webinar was well attended and the webinar was coordinated by Prof. Manjunath Narwate, Prof. Gaurish Samant and Prof. Achintya Kambli.
