Report on Two day Workshop on Advanced Design of Steel Structures
The Civil Engineering Department of Goa College of Engineering organised a two day workshop on Advanced Design of Steel Structures on 21st & 22nd September 2017 at GEC, Farmagudi.
The chief guest for the function was Dr. Jayanta Kumar Saha Dy. General Manager (INSDAG). There were total eight technical talks conducted on metallurgy of steel as well as design of various steel structural elements according to IS 800:2007 Limit State design method.
On day one Dr. Jayanta Kumar Saha gave an insight into the various types and grades of steel as well as the manufacturing process for cold formed and hot rolled steel sections. He also talked about corrosion protection as well as fireproofing methods for steel.
Dr. Mukund Shiyekar, explained in detail the structural design and detailing of steel bridges according to Limit State Design method using Influence Line Diagrams. In the afternoon session he gave a talk on design of castellated beams.
On the following day i.e. 23rd September 2017 Dr. Siddharta Ghosh delivered a talk on instability in steel beams and told us about various types of failure a steel beam can experience. In the afternoon session he introduced us to new software for steel design developed by himself along with others called OSDAG.
Dr. Mukund R. Shiyekar gave a presentation on design of plate girders and gantry girders.
Mr. Madhav Kamat gave a talk on design methodology for tubular structures and shared with us his experiences in the field on use of such structures at various places in Goa.
The last talk of the workshop was delivered by Dr. Purnanand Savoikar where he explained design of bolted and welded connections as well as design of tension and compression members according to IS 800:2007.
The workshop concluded with the Question and answer session and valedictory session.
