Talk on ‘Biomimetic: Learning from Nature’ at Government High School Zambaulim under Vidhyan Dhara 2024
The Government High School Zambaulim hosted a captivating talk on ‘Biomimetics: Learning from Nature’ on February 28, 2024. Presented by Mr. Tanay Rege, Assistant Professor from our college, the session was part of Vidnyan Dhara 2024, a science series dedicated to fostering scientific inquiry among students.
During the talk, over 60 students from Classes 6 to 8 explored how nature inspires technology. They learnt about intriguing examples where nature has influenced technological innovations. For instance, they discovered how Japan’s bullet trains drew inspiration from the kingfisher bird’s beak for their design, enabling them to be both fast and quiet. Additionally, students were fascinated by the development of Velcro, inspired by the hooks on burrs found in nature.
The discussion also delved into the early days of flight, highlighting how airplane designs were influenced by birds’ flight patterns. Moreover, students learnt about the development of ultrasonic sensors, resembling bats’ echolocation, and their applications in various technology such as robotics, cars, and aids for the blind.
Furthermore, the talk explored how robots mimic animal movements, such as those of elephants and octopuses. Students were intrigued by the development of adhesives inspired by gecko feet, as well as aircraft designs like the B2 bomber, which borrow ideas from birds’ flight mechanics. Additionally, they discovered how wind turbines are designed based on the fins of whales.
The session concluded by encouraging students to closely observe nature and contemplate how its designs could inspire future inventions. Overall, the talk promised to spark curiosity and inspire students to think creatively about the world around them
