A talk on Post-tensioning of concrete members was delivered to the final year Civil Engineering on 07th March 2018 by Er. Shekhar Panandikar– Consultant of Shekhar Panandiker & Associates and Er. Arvind Nayak.

Er. Shekhar Panandikar introduced the concept of post tension of concrete to the students in the beginning of the session stating that Post-tensioning is a method of reinforcing (strengthening) concrete or other materials with high-strength steel strands or bars, typically referred to as tendons. He then spoke about the various places where this method could be used like office and apartment buildings, parking structures, slabs-on-ground, bridges, sports stadiums etc. He explained the various places where they have done this method greatly especially, in cases where convectional construction that would otherwise be impossible either due to site constraints or architectural requirements.

Later Er. Arvind Nayak presented a case study of an office building at Verna where they have done Post tensioning of the slabs to achieve thinner slabs with longer spans and fewer columns. He explained the full process of how they carried out this PT operation on site for the slabs. He also stated the benefits of using PT over standard reinforcing steel (rebars) like Faster Installation, Minimizes and Controls Cracking, Controls deflections, material saving etc.
