TE MECH Field Visit to Oriental Containers, Crompton Greaves Motor Division and Goa Institute of Management

On 22nd September 2018, students of Third Year Mechanical Engineering of Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda visited Oriental Containers Pvt. Ltd., Crompton Greaves Motor Division at Kundaim Industrial Estate and Goa Institute of Management at Sanquelim. The visit was organized in association with Mechanical Engineering Student Hub (MESH). Students were accompanied by Prof. Ajit Salunke , Prof. Swapnil Ramani , Prof. Saurabh Raikar and Prof. Gaurish Samant.

Oriental Containers Ltd. is one of the leading manufacturer of Bottle caps & Closures, Crowns, Carton boxes etc. for a wide variety of beverages and other products. The plant is divided into 2 major sections: Production and Quality Control. Mr. Rajendra Patil, Quality Control engineer explained about how the raw materials used in manufacturing are stored and tested. The raw materials include Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Master Batches in the form of granules, liquid etc. Various bottle cap quality testing equipment like Dial Comparator, Torque tester, Bridge strength tester, Box Compression tester were demonstrated to the students. In the production section the students were made familiar with the manufacturing procedure followed and also the online Visual Monitoring Systems. The Production line is fully automated with CNC machines with inbuilt hydraulic and pneumatic systems which are controlled via PLC. The cameras along the line are fitted with sensors which relay real time information to the Computer system to check if Cap is of acceptable dimensions. The Printing machines are also automated and make use of innovative roller based system for printing on the caps. Fully automated line ensures that the production rate is very high with very less rejects or scrap.

Crompton Greaves Motor Division is one of the leading manufacturers of Motor General & Industrial motors for a variety of applications like coolers, exhaust pumps, dairy, and agriculture with capacities ranging from 20 to 5500 W. Mr. Vaibhav Velingkar briefed the students about the various motor products manufactured in the plant. After this the students were taken around the production plant and briefed about the various stages of production of a wide variety of motors. Winding Section, Feeder shop and the final Assembly line were explained to the students in detail. Students were exposed to a wide variety of conventional and automated machines in the plant .These include traditional lathe, milling, press machines, broaching and also CNC lathe, Hydraulic Die casting process, Spot and seam welding etc. The Surface treatment procedure of varnishing was also explained to the students. The last section was the R& D center in which the students could get a glimpse of the future products the company is on the verge of launching.

Goa Institute of Management is one of the most Premier and Prestigious B-Schools in the Country located at Sanquelim. Prof. Akshay S. Bhat from GIM conducted a session for the students in which briefed about the History of GIM, the course offered, facilities and the admission procedures. The session was highly interactive wherein the doubts and misconception regarding Management Sciences as a career were cleared by Dr, Bhat in his unique and innovative style. After the session the students were taken around the campus and got a glimpse of the classrooms, hostel, library and other facilities offered in GIM.

The Visit was coordinated by Prof. Ajit Salunke, Prof. Swapnil Ramani and Prof. Gaurish Samant. Overall it was a very enlightening and learning experience for the students of BE Mechanical.
