Webinar on Energy Efficiency in Industries Through Energy Auditing
The Department of Mechanical Engineering in association with ISHRAE DBCE Student Chapter organised a webinar on “Energy Efficiency in Industries Through Energy Auditing”, on July 10, 2021 to bridge the gap between academics and industry. The session was delivered by Dr. K. Srinivas Reddy, Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT Madras
The webinar was hosted via Google meet. Participants from Industry, Faculty from other engineering colleges and Polytechnics, ISHRAE members, final year Mechanical Engineering students and Faculties from Mechanical Department attended the webinar. The event was hosted and coordinated by Prof. Sharad Shanbhag and Prof. Tanay Rege. The event commenced with a welcome address by Rev. Fr. Kinley D’Cruz, Director. He said that “The world today is looking for newer and more efficient and sustainable energy sources, Solar energy being one of them and giant strides are being made to harness solar energy.”. He highlighted to the participants on the importance of energy and the effect of energy consumption. Dr. Neena Panandikar, Principal appreciated the efforts of the ISHRAE student chapter and the organizing team. She said that “organising events like this under the ISHRAE banner will help students to develop excellent networking opportunities with the Industry Professionals to gain knowledge.”. Prof. Sharad Shanbhag welcomed the participants and gave a brief introduction about the resource person.
Dr. K. Srinivas Reddy started off his session on different forms of energy, thermodynamics involved in energy transfer and showed with graphical representation as to why there is a need for energy auditing to reduce energy consumption. He explained the various steps of energy auditing to determine when, where, why and how energy is used in a plant or building. He also showed an example of energy audit carried out in a starch Industry and explored the different energy saving opportunities. He concluded his session by saying that “economics is very important when we implement energy efficiency in Industries” . He also showed some pictures of solar thermal technologies for power generation through 4-D approach (Design-Development-Demonstration-Deployment) installed in IIT Madras campus. He kept the entire session very interactive, ensuring to answer all the queries raised by the participants. Mr. Sunil Shetye, President, ISHRAE Goa chapter praised the speaker for his knowledge sharing session and said that “It is important for our country to have a sustainable energy resource to meet the energy demand.”. He congratulated DBCE ISHRAE team for taking efforts to organise the webinar. Prof. Tanay Rege proposed the vote of thanks.
