Business Planning Session for SE E-cell Students
Through a talk organised by our institute’s Entrepreneurship Cell on 3rd November 2023, we had the privilege of receiving insights on business planning from Mr. Damodar Pai Patnekar, CEO and Co-Founder of Bodhami. Mr. Patnekar’s accomplishments, including being a National Award Winner from DPIIT and a recipient of the Eminent Goans Achiever’s Award by the Government of Goa, highlight his expertise in this domain.
At the offset, Mr. Patnekar emphasized the significance of meticulous planning and strategic thinking when launching a business. He outlined a comprehensive set of key steps for anyone looking to establish or develop a business:
- Select a Product or Service
- Identify the Target Customer Segment
- Analyze Competition
- Devise a Marketing Strategy
- Manage Finances
- Streamline Operations
- Optimize Distribution
- Build the Right Team
To illustrate these steps, Mr. Patnekar presented a hypothetical example: starting a t-shirt company. He stressed the importance of understanding and targeting the right audience. This involves offering quality products at competitive prices, thereby making the brand more appealing. He introduced the concept of a customer pyramid, starting with offering affordable, high-quality products to attract a large customer base, followed by catering to the middle class with slightly higher-priced items, and finally, offering premium products to a select clientele. This approach, he emphasized, can yield significant profits, even with a smaller customer base. Mr. Patnekar highlighted the importance of providing value to a brand. He discussed strategies to stand out from competitors, such as engaging with both B2B businesses and B2C consumers and scaling products according to demand. He also elaborated on creating brand recognition through marketing, including social media, events, and online platforms like Amazon. Reducing production costs was another key aspect. He touched on financing options, including bank loans, investors, and self-funding. Due to time constraints, Mr. Patnekar couldn’t delve deeply into operational details, but he emphasized the need to establish efficient operations. Building a competent team, he explained, is crucial. As the business grows, hiring and leading employees effectively become vital. In a Q&A session, Mr. Patnekar addressed questions about the dedication required to overcome challenges and the common reasons for startup failures. He encouraged young entrepreneurs to find their niche and start businesses early, emphasizing that starting young is advantageous.
In conclusion, Mr. Damodar Pai Patnekar provided a comprehensive framework for business planning, highlighting the importance of strategy, marketing, and team building. His valuable insights are a guide for anyone aspiring to launch or grow a successful business. The session concluded with a gracious vote of thanks delivered by Khushi Shirsat, serving as the student coordinator for this event. Her closing remarks expressed gratitude and appreciation to all participants, encapsulating the essence of the session.
