Expert Talk on Exploring Graph Matching and Graph Coloring
The Department of Science and Humanities hosted an illuminating Expert Talk by Dr. Jessica Fernandes e Pereira, Assistant Professor in Mathematics at Goa University on 31st August 2024. The talk, titled “Exploring Graph Matching and Graph Coloring”, was aimed at expanding students’ knowledge of advanced graph theory concepts and their practical applications.
Dr. Pereira explained the concept of graph matching, describing various types such as perfect matchings, maximum matchings etc. She illustrated applications in job assignment problems, network design, and resource allocation, showing how matchings can optimize performance and efficiency. Applications in scheduling (e.g., exam timetabling), frequency assignment in mobile networks and solving other partitioning problems were discussed.
The talk included a vibrant Q&A session where students asked questions about the applications of graph theory. The expert talk was a significant academic event for the Department of Science and Humanities as well as the student attendees. The speaker’s clear explanations and practical examples provided valuable insights into complex graph theory topics. The session was well-received by students, who appreciated the opportunity to learn from a leading expert in the field. This session was coordinated by Mrs. Vaishali Parakhi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Science and Humanities, under the guidance of Dr. Kala Nayak, Head of the Department.
