Indian Geotechnical Society Field Visit

The Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) Goa Student Chapter of Don Bosco College of Engineering, accompanied by Professor Jeffery Valadares, organized a field trip to the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) in Vasco on 16th Of January 2025. A total of 18 students participated in this enriching experience.
The visit began with a warm welcome from the esteemed scientists at NCPOR, Dr. Swati Nagar and Mr. Ravikant Sharma. An introductory video showcasing the research activities and accomplishments of NCPOR was then shown. Following the video, Dr. Swati Nagar introduced Mr. Ravikant Sharma. Mr. Sharma then addressed the gathering with an introductory presentation, covering the research objectives, infrastructure and the role of Civil engineers in supporting polar and ocean research. He emphasized the unique challenges and considerations for construction in cryoscopic regions like Antarctica and the Himalayas.
Following the insightful presentation, Mr. Ravikant led the students on a guided tour of the NCPOR Vasco facility. This comprehensive site visit provided firsthand exposure to the institute’s state-of-the-art laboratories, showcasing their functionalities and the cutting-edge research being conducted within, where students learned about its necessity and intended use. This immersive experience proved to be invaluable for the students, providing them with a deeper understanding of polar and ocean research and the crucial role of Civil Engineering in supporting these critical scientific endeavours.
