NDLI Session on Preserving the Goan Identity

The NDLI (National Digital Library of India) Club of Don Bosco College of Engineering in association with the Department of Science & Humanities organized a Talk on “Preserving the Goan Identity”. The session aimed to help students understand and appreciate Goa’s culture and history. Mr. Kevin Pereira, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Science and Humanities, welcomed the gathering and introduced the distinguished speaker, Dr. Prajal Sakhardande, a historian, heritage activist, and academic known for his work in preserving the history and cultural identity of Goa. A total of 137 club members registered and attended the event.
Dr. Sakhardande began the session with an insightful presentation that took the audience on a journey through Goa’s rich historical past – from the early Gaonkar system and the Pre- Portuguese era to more recent developments. He spoke about the first rulers of Goa, including the Kadamba dynasty, the Moghuls, and the Portuguese, explaining how each regime shaped the region’s social and cultural landscape. From his fieldwork and explorations with his team, he shared photographs of ancient caves, rock art, hidden tunnels, and centuries-old temples across Goa. He also discussed the traditions, festivals, and rituals that continue to thrive in rural and tribal communities. His explanations of place names, family lineages, and regional dialects captivated the audience and showed how rich and diverse Goa’s language and culture are. Dr. Sakhardande stressed the need for youth involvement in heritage conservation and encouraged students to engage with and explore Goa’s historical landmarks to foster a deeper sense of belonging and cultural pride.
The talk not only sparked curiosity but also instilled a renewed sense of responsibility toward preserving and promoting Goa’s cultural identity. Concluding the event, Ms. Carol Cardozo, Asst. Professor, Dept of Science and Humanities, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sakhardande for his enlightening presentation and his continued dedication to cultural preservation. The event was smoothly organized and successfully coordinated by Mr. Harison Cota, Assistant Professor and NDLI Coordinator – Department of Science & Humanities, along with Ms. Vanessa Fernandes, NDLI Coordinator – Library.
