Civil Tour

The Department of Civil Engineering ,Don Bosco College of Engineering organised an educational tour for the final year Civil engineering students to Pune from 8th -12th January 2019.The students were accompanied by Asst. Prof. Satyesh Kakodkar,Asst. Prof. B.R Anirudha and Asst. Prof. Akshata Kudchadker.
On 9th January, the students visited the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) where Mr. Siddharth Hadao explained on the studies conducted by the CWPRS on rivers for detecting patches of sedimentation and rectifying old structures subjected to erosion due to continuous water action on them.He also showed the students a 1:300 scale model of the Yamuna River. He explained to the students that scale models like these are made to act as simulators on how worst floods would affect the structures built on the river. Engineer Bilal Sheikh later showed scaled models of ports and jetties in India and gave an explanation on the concepts and workings of these different ports that they have worked on. Demonstration on current meter working was also shown to them which is used for measuring the velocity of flow in channels.
On 10th January, the students visited the College of Military Engineering (CME) where the students were able to see a model building having various civil engineering works like English bond, Flemish bond, pointings, different types of flooring like terrazzo ,linoleum & timber board flooring, oil distemper etc. Also, Professor Choudhary showed them different laboratories such as the Structural, Applied Mechanics, Strength of materials, Material display room, Timber model room & the highway engineering room where the students saw different models like staircase, footing reinforcements detailing etc. The students also got to see Asia’s largest rowing channel in the campus.
Later in the evening, the students visited the Kolte-Patil Mega-Township. On site, Mr. Mangesh Shinde- the Project Head,Mr. Rahul Tarale -Project Director and Mr. Pravin Mahajan – Quality Manager were present to address the students. The students were informed that the size of the Project was 500 acres and the buildings constructed were of 21 storeys each. They were also informed that a new method of construction called Kumkang Aluminium formwork system was used due to which they could complete a single building of the project within a year. They also mentioned that M30 grade high flow concrete was used for construction. Senior Quality Engineer Mr. Yuvraj Lombde gave a brief idea on the various tests done on the concrete in their laboratory.
