IEEE STUDENTS OF DBCE ORGANIZED EDUCATIONAL TOUR TO BANGALORE REPORT
The IEEE Student Branch of Don Bosco of Engineering, Goa organized its first Educational Tour to Bangalore from 7th February 2019 to 11th February 2019 under the guidance of IEEE Branch Counselor, Prof. Yeshudas Muttu & Advisor, Dr. Varsha Turkar. 65 IEEE students along with 4 Faculty members, Prof. Yeshudas Muttu, Dr. Varsha Turkar, Prof. Mohini Naik & Prof. Satyesh Kakodkar visited Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Museum and People’s Education Society (PES) University.
DAY 1: UR Rao Satellite Centre, ISRO & HAL Museum
Mr. H L Srinivasa, Senior scientist at ISRO welcomed the gathering and guided the students with initial demo video of the satellite so as to know how the Satellite parts were merged at different layers, its transportation at the launching pad, rocket launch and separation at different stages, satellite being in the orbit, etc. Under space technology, Mr. Srinivasa introduced us to the two types of launch -PSLV of 4 stages and GSLV Mark III satellites. We were then guided to the clean room & mentioned that there are 7 Clean rooms present in total.
Later, everyone was then taken to the exhibition of satellite models and posters such as ASLV, PSLV, GSLV- D1, Rohini and Bhaskara Satellite, Camera used in satellites having range of 800 km) and Antennas (Unfurlable antennas & Phased array antennas). In addition to this, various MIC components used in the construction of satellite were displayed. Students were also briefed about the past and future missions of ISRO.
This was followed by Q & A session where Mr. Srinivasa cleared the doubts of the students, encountered during the sequence. Lastly, Mr. Srinivasa briefed on how to pursue our career in ISRO.
Next, we visited HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) Museum and some of the features that marked its importance are its history that was led by Mr. Seth Walchand Hirachand followed by the milestone of HAL, its vision, mission and values. There were various posters of the events from 1940s till present. The museum houses displays various aircraft and helicopters, Aircraft engine models, Flight simulators, a mock Air Traffic Control Tower and exhibit of Indian aviation history. In addition, model on PSLV, Air Traffic Control Radar & Antenna, Meteorological Radar, HT-2 were displayed along with the audio visuals facility.
Day 2: PES University of Technology – PISAT
The Students were taken to the ground station in the satellite control room. Dr. V.G. K. Bangararaju explained about the different satellites that they launched and how signals had been received and monitored. He also introduced on different equipment like cable swap mechanism, 70 MHz FM modem; facilities present in the campus about providing problem statements for which the students to come up with their innovative ideas.
All were than guided to the ESD lab where we were shown the different equipment used to integrate the satellite. Various antennas used in the satellite were shown. This was followed by demonstration of the 3.7m paraboloid antenna placed on the rooftop with its proper positioning to receive the signal.
In the conference room of PES University, Dr. V Sambasiva Rao presented the various test equations, introducing PISAT as their first satellite build in ESD lab, its 13W power consumption and TT&C S-band operation and the various research projects that were undertaken, funded by government as well as various agencies. RSAT is one of such projects, funded by DRDO to track the ships globally. In addition, library maintenance robot, PIPO to sort out the books is few to be listed. This was coupled with a short video of Chandrayaan-II, IRS sub-satellite point and Real Time Imaging for Downlink. The session concluded, acknowledging the speakers by the IEEE Chair, Mr. Sherwin Colaco.
Later, Students were taken to the exhibition of projects from various departments where there was interaction with the students of PES & Don Bosco College of Engineering, Goa.
The educational tour was a great benefit for the students to understand about the various concepts of satellite and space missions by ISRO, various aircraft models at the HAL & ground station setup information at PES University. Apart from the knowledge, such expeditions provide an opportunity to the students for the concern and involvement with their peer cluster. All the IEEE Student members have really worked hard to make this happen & deserve whole hearted appreciation.
