The students of SE ETC visited  NCPOR (National Centre Polar and Ocean Research) and 3D Infinity. Prof. Melba D’souza  and Prof. Selwyn Fernandes accompanied the students with proper guidance and assistance.

We first arrived at NCPOR where Dr. M.V. Ramesh guided us towards the Auditorium Building that displayed various activities that were undertaken- Antarctic European Logistics, Artic and Oceanographic Research, Vesser Sagar Kanya; an ESSO (Earth System Science Organisation) and its collaboration with Indo- European Polar Science. We then led our way to the auditorium. Dr. Ramesh highlighted the importance of Antarctic in tune with its biodiversity and environment. The centre established Ice Core Analysis lab, where the samples of air, ice and soil are collected to study past climatic condition from Antarctic that has a span of thousand years.

Further, the session on Remote Sensing was taken over by Dr. Alvarinho J Luis. He began with the introduction of remote sensing, processing of signals (through GIS), operations on EM waves, orbits- linear, polar, circular and elliptical and so forth. The slide displayed various manned spacecrafts such as Atlantis and Challenger. The satellite CARTOSAT provides data to NCPOR from which further analysis is done. Dr. Luis mentioned application of remote sensing in Hydrology, Sea- Ice, Agriculture, Forestry. Various traces of the earth- Sakurajima Volcano, Japan; Chlorophyll Detection were shown. This was followed by Q & A session. It was then concluded by Dr. Mahesh in showing the videos- 30th Indian Expedition, Overview of NCAOR.

Indeed, ‘Antarctica- celebration of victory and extraordinary height to life’.

The journey continued to 3D Infinity 3D, where Mr. Sanket was the speaker. He exposed to us the various 3D printers- Gider 2, Creator Pro, Extruder; the various models prepared by them. He also specified the application of 3D printing in house building, fuses, cases; how the architecture designed on software results with the final product of the model. The speaker also mentioned the materials used such as AVS, PLA, TPU depending on the application; the internships they offer and the product they make and sell. The session was concluded by the exposure of 3D pen and demonstrating it.

With knowledge gained and skill involved, the field trip was a success that will help us to learn more and produce more.
