Mechanical Engineering department visited ONGC Goa and Dilip Builcon Limited, Aggasim on 23rd March 2019
The Second Year Mechanical Engineering Students of Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda & Faculty members of Mechanical Engineering department visited ONGC Goa and Dilip Builcon Limited, Aggasim on 23rd March 2019 .
Maharatna ONGC(Oil and natural Gas corporation) is the largest crude oil and natural gas company in India. It is a PSU of Government of India, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It was founded with the sole purpose of searching for potential oil fields in the country to curb the dependency of India on other oil producing countries.
The ONGC plant at Betul basically deals with fire fighting and safety measures required during search and extraction of oil. This is of great importance as oil is highly flammable and safety precautions need to be taken while operating it. So, for this purpose, various facilities for safety training are present at Betul Plant.
There the students were welcomed by Mr. Jayant Kumar Singh, an officer at ONGC. Mr. J.K Singh gave a brief introduction about ONGC and its operations.
Firstly, an introduction to various manual fire fighting techniques and also information about do’s and don’ts in case of a fire was demonstrated.
This was followed by depiction of various impactful equipment’s which were Water Monitor- an amiable controllable high capacity water jet used to extinguish fire at a range of up to 60 m, Fire Fighting nozzle , Mayur Valve, Water Umbrella each one having a specific advantage for a specific application. A small explosion of a spray can in a controlled cylinder was also show and and its was extinguished by Water monitor. Along with these, information about different types of fires was provided which are Class A(Ash- Solid fire),Class B( Barrel- Liquid fire),Class C(Cylinder – Gaseous Fire), Class D(Ductile – Metal Fire) fires. Lastly, the students were taught about the different types of extinguishers and their SOP (standard operating procedure). These include – Water type, Powder (chemical type), Foam and Gas(Co2). The Students also operated all the extinguishers to extinguish fire set up using oil.
The field visit at ONGC was a very exhilarating experience for all the students and made the students aware about ONGC and also about the career opportunities in such PSU’s. The staff at ONGC was very welcoming and supportive.
The last visit was to Dilip Buildcon Ltd, Agassim who are in charge of building the New Bridge across the Zuari River. The students were taken to the KRCL division where they were shown the different wielding machines and processes. Mr Vikrant Patel Assistant General Manager Structures along with his team guided the students. Robotic Arm with a plasma cutting fixture are used to cut MS plates and similar robotic arm with welding fixtures attached to the arm which is used to join the plates.
The visit was organized by Prof. Ajit Salunke, Prof. Swapnil Ramani and Prof. Gaurish Samant. Overall it was a very enlightening and learning experience for the students of SE Mechanical & Also for the faculty members.
