On 25th March 2019 the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Don Bosco College of Engineering organized an expert talk in association with Institution of Engineers (India), DBCE Student chapter on “Non Destructive Testing (NDT)” methods by Er. Pritesh Chodankar, Proprietor of Indo Veritas Inspection & NDT training and services, Taleigao,Goa.

The topics covered during the talk were different types of Nondestructive testing methods.       Er. Pritesh explained the various NDT methods used in the industries to evaluate the properties of material, component or a system without causing damage. In other words, when the inspection or test is conducted the part can be still used as NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected. It is a highly valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation.

Most frequently used NDT techniques in industries explained by Er. Pritesh were Dye penetrant testing, Magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic flaw detection, Radiography testing.

 Radiography testing technique:

This technique is suitable for the detection of internal defects in ferrous and nonferrous metals and other materials. X-rays, generated electrically, and Gamma rays emitted from radio-active isotopes, are differentially absorbed by the material through which it passes; the greater the thickness, the greater the absorption. Furthermore the denser the material the greater the absorption

Magnetic Particle Inspection:

This method is suitable for the detection of surface and near surface discontinuities in magnetic material, mainly steel and iron.

Dye Penetrant Testing

This method is frequently used for the detection of surface breaking flaws in non-ferromagnetic materials.

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection

This technique is used for the detection of internal and surface (particularly distant surface) defects in sound conducting materials.

All the above NDT methods were well explained by the resource person along with showing the videos of different methods.

Overall it was a very enlightening and learning experience for the students of SE Mechanical & Also for the faculty members. The talk was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Sharad Shanbhag, IEI faculty coordinator and Asst. Prof Manjunath Narwate Prof. Ajit Salunke, HOD Mechanical, IEI faculty advisor, organized the talk.
