Webinar on Additive Manufacturing for Medical Applications
The Department of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Binghamton University, USA organized a webinar on Additive Manufacturing for Medical Applications on December 5, 2020 from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm. The webinar was actively attended by academicians, industry professionals and engineering students from various organizations/institutes. The resource person for the webinar was Dr. Jia Deng, Assistant Professor, Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Binghamton University, USA. Dr. Deng gave an introductory insight into application of additive manufacturing in various fields ranging from aerospace to biomedical. This was followed by an overview on the additive manufacturing process from techniques to develop 3D models, creation of STL file, material extrusion processes to the final 3D print and its end application. Dr. Deng further discussed on the recent utilization of additive manufacturing for combating COVID-19 in preparing ventilator adaptors made of PLA/PETG biocompatible thermoplastics and face masks made of TPU+PLA. Dr. Deng also discussed the application of additive manufacturing for Orthodontics by printing teeth models and its quality inspection. The webinar was well received by the attendees while they raised queries pertaining to the research in the domain to the speaker. The conveners of the event were Principal, Dr. Neena Panandikar and HOD Mechanical, Prof. Ajit Salunke while the event was coordinated by Prof. Gaurish Samant and Prof. Harshad Pingulkar.
