Webinar on ABS

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Don Bosco College of Engineering conducted a webinar on Antilock Braking system and it’s Practical Application on March 27, 2021 in association with IEI DBCE Mechanical student chapter for the third year Mechanical Engineering students. The speaker for the session was Dr. C.S. Shankar Ram, Professor, Department of Engineering Design, IIT, Madras.

The speaker started the session with a brief overview of objectives of braking system and the functioning of hydraulic brake system. He explained how the ABS (Antilock braking system) helps the driver to maintain some steering ability and avoid skidding while braking. A typical ABS system includes wheel-speed sensors, a hydraulic control unit, and an electronic control unit. When the brake pedal is applied, the electronic control unit monitors and compares the signals from the wheel-speed sensors. If the electronic control unit senses rapid deceleration at a given wheel, the electronic control unit commands the hydraulic control unit to reduce hydraulic pressure to that wheel.

The Anti-lock Braking System is designed to maintain vehicle control, directional stability and optimum deceleration under severe braking conditions on most road surfaces. It does so by monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel and controlling the brake line pressure to each wheel during braking. This prevents the wheels from locking up. He concluded the session by showing videos of ABS and non-ABS vehicle thereby highlighting the importance of ABS in vehicles.
