Department of Civil Engineering – Don Bosco College of Engineering organized an online lecture on 16 October 2021 on ‘Occupational Health and Safety and Safety Management in Industries’. This lecture was organized to bridge the gap between the industry and academia. The speaker for the lecture was Mr. Richie Baracho a recognized Safety Officer as per Goa Factories rule. The talk was organized By Asst. Prof. Jeffrey Valadares who is engaging the Subject of ‘Occupational Health and Safety Assessment’ as an open elective for the third year Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering students.

 Mr. Baracho covered topics on roles and responsibilities of safety officers, he explained about few cases in the industries which led to the improvement of the environmental and safety laws in the industries. He gave different examples of unsafe acts and unsafe conditions at work places. He elaborated on hazard identification and risk assessment and the procedures followed by Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (HIRA).

He also highlighted on the safety committee, accident investigation committee, external audit, training and on safe handling of equipment, job safety, employee participation, monitoring the exposure to hazard. In the question answer round the students asked him about the courses and the pre-requisites required to become a safety officer, to which he also explained the requirements of  National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) courses and Advance Diploma in Industrial Safety courses.

Overall the lecture was a very interesting and interactive.
