Educational Tour Bangalore – Mysore
The Department of Civil Engineering organized a educational tour to Bangalore and Mysore for the final year students from 26th January to February 2nd 2024. Students visited Lalbagh Botanical Garden Mavalli, Bengaluru, Radha Krishna Iskcon Temple, Bangalore Palace, Cubbon Park, Central Library, High Court and Vidhana Soudha, Adiyogi Shiva Statue at Chikkaballapur. Students also visited construction sites of high-rise building and villas of Nambiar builders at Sarjapur Bangalore. The Project engineer briefed about the projects and the material which is used in constructing, the properties, plastering processes, Reinforcements, shuttering, casting etc.
Students were taken to the Mysore Palace to explore the history of Mysore palace, Indo-Saracenic architecture, Islamic, Rajput, and Gothic architecture styles etc. The Palace is a three-story, gray granite structure, about 75 m (245 ft) long and about 48 m (156 ft) wide. There are square towers, five stories tall, at each of the cardinal points, topped with pink domes. The tallest tower, 44 m (145 ft) tall, is at the center of the palace and is topped with a gold-plated dome. The facade has arches, canopies, and bay windows. There are seven arches and two smaller arches that connect to the centralized arch of the facade. Thereafter the students visited the Karnataka Engineering research Station and Krishna Raja Sagara Dam. The assistant engineer briefed and gave a talk on how the construction work of dam commenced in the year 1901 started in 1911 and completed in 1931. The Dam has 173 vertical sluice gates. The eight sets of gates are connected by means of chains and pulleys to a dead weight, which in turn is connected to a float, making up the ‘balance weight’ together, working inside a masonry well, both on the rear of the dam. Students also visited the Brindavan Gardens, which is a show garden that has a botanical park, with fountains, as well as boat rides beneath the dam. Brindavan Gardens were built by Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. It was designed by German botanist Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel. It lies adjoining the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam which is built across the river Kaveri.
The educational tour proved immensely beneficial, greatly enhancing students’ knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. The tour was accompanied by Head of Civil department Dr. Shwetha Prasanna, Asst Prof. Starina Dias, Asst Prof. Jeffrey Valadares and Asst Prof. B R Anirudha.
