Expert Talk on “Testing of Statistical Hypotheses with Real Data”

On 7th October 2025, the Department of Science & Humanities at Don Bosco College of Engineering organized an expert talk titled “Testing of Statistical Hypotheses with Real Data”. The session was delivered by the resource person Ms. Anindita Chakrabarty, an expert in statistics and data analytics.
The participants included ME (Data Science) students, BE Mechanical students familiar with Engineering Statistics, and faculty members. The talk was held under the theme “Data Speaks: Celebrating Statistics for Smarter Decisions”.
Ms. Chakrabarty provided a comprehensive overview of statistical hypothesis testing and its practical applications using real-world data. She spoke about various contemporary applications such as credit card risk analytics, predictive statistical modeling, strategy development, AI-powered cancer detection, the confusion matrix, drug trials, and A/B testing. Through these examples, she illustrated how statistical tools and data analysis methods are crucial in diverse fields including finance, healthcare, and product development. This helped students gain a deeper understanding of how data-driven decisions and statistical methods underpin real-world engineering and scientific problem-solving.
The interactive nature of the session encouraged students to engage actively, ask questions, and discuss different scenarios where statistical testing is applied.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Kala Nayak, who also enlightened the students about the contributions of prominent statisticians to the field. The session was efficiently coordinated by Mrs. Vaishali Parakhi.
