Field visit to Goa Waste Management Corporation, Goa State Pollution Board and Zuari Bridge

The Faculty of Department of Civil Engineering – Don Bosco College Of Engineering, Fatorda went for a field trip on November 29, 2021 to Goa Waste Management Corporation, Goa Pollution Board and Zuari Bridge.

On reaching the Solid Waste Treatment Plant site at Saligao Mr. Shaukan Teli welcome the faculty and gave them a brief idea of the plant. He said that “the plant was inaugurated in the year 2016 and the Government has issued a letter to Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd to increase the capacity of the facility from existing 100 tonnes per day to 250 tonnes per day.”  The faculty then proceeded to see the plant which has been planned with the state-of-the-art modern facility based on mechanical biological treatment (MBt) process with proper segregation, recovery of recyclables and a bio-methanation process. Mr. Shaukan Teli concluded that currently the plant handles waste generated by 27 coastal village panchayats.

The faculty then visited the Goa State Pollution Board.The Chairman Mr. Ganesh Shetgaonkar said “the building was designed by Ar. Gerrard Da Cunha and the building mostly runs on natural ventilation”, he later stated also that the building roof has heat resistant glasses which keep the building also cool throughout the day. The faculty later saw the State of the Art building which has a full-fledged Laboratory and office complex.

During the latter half of the day, the faculty was taken to the Zuari bridge site where Er. Dev Patil Senior Construction Manager and Er. Dyaneshwar Deshmukh Senior Manager (Planning and Billing) stated “the existing bridge is a composite structure of steel and concrete” they later explained the 4 lane section of the bridge in detail right from the bridge deck slab to the pylons and method of tendon prestressing.

In all 13 faculty attended the fieldvisit.
