IEEE SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME (SKEP) REPORT

IEEE Student branch of Don Bosco College of Engineering, Goa was inaugurated on 1st February 2019 by IEEE Bombay Section Secretary, Dr. B. Satyanarayana. This was followed by two days Skill and Knowledge Enhancement programme (SKEP) coordinated by IEEE Branch Counselor, Prof. Yeshudas Muttu & initiated by IEEE Advisor, Dr. Varsha Turkar.. The objective of organizing these expert talks under SKEP of IEEE Bombay section was to provide a platform for students to get introduced to unique research areas, so that as an engineer, they can contribute in various fields of science. The five eminent SKEP speakers from IEEE Bombay section were Dr. B. Satyanarayana, Dr. Sanjay S. Shitole, Dr. Sangita Chaudhari, Dr. Saurabh Mehta and Dr. Amiya Tripathy.

Day1: February 1, 2019

IEEE Student Member, Mr. Rohit Sardessai welcomed everyone for the SKEP Lecture series & requested Dr. B. Satyanarayana Sir to take over the session.

Session 1 – Technology and Engineering: The Mission and the Vision of IEEE

Speaker: Dr. B. Satyanarayana (PhD. IITB), Scientific Officer (H) Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

Dr. B. Satyanarayana began his session with interrelation between science, technology and engineering.  He gave brief information about the history of formation of IEEE. He mentioned about IEEE being the world’s largest Professional network, affinity groups and various IEEE societies. He even pointed out main motive of IEEE is to improve quality of life by providing electricity in rural areas, e-Health Programs, Portable power, etc. Dr. B. Satyanarayana concluded the seminar with a motivating phrase “Education can never be stopped or forced to be stopped; It’s a part of life”.

Session 2 – Importance of Research at Undergraduate Level

Speaker: Dr. Sanjay Shitole (PhD. IITB), Secretary, IEEE GRSS Mumbai Chapter

The next speaker for the day was Dr. Sanjay S. Shitole who was introduced by IEEE Student member, Ms. Pooja Phadtare. Dr. Sanjay Shitole began his session with introduction to research and the ways to be creative. He also explained how research proves to be an intensive force within the researcher. He instilled the joy to take up research work giving proper guidelines and blended the technical details required to put one’s research in the form of a paper. He rightly pointed out that writing the paper is how you develop the idea in the first place. Later, in depths of paper writing was effectively covered. To conclude, he suggested few tools like LaTex, Gnuplot, Gimp, LaTex draw to build a paper.

 

 Day 2: February 2, 2019

IEEE student member, Mr. Zeus Fernandes introduced everyone first speaker of the day, Dr. Sangita Chaudhari.

Session 1 – GIS and Carrier opportunities

The session began with introduction to Geographical Information System (GIS), basic components of GIS and importance of GIS. Discrete objects & fields, Vector Data model, Raster model & various topologies in GIS were discussed. She also mentioned about the various software used in this field. The session was extended to explain the applications of GIS & case studies. GIS Career Opportunities were conferred so that students can get clear idea and understand the importance of this field.

 

Session 2 – HAM Radio

Speaker: Dr. Saurabh Mehta (Ph.D., South Korea), IEEE Bombay Section Execom member

The next speaker for the day was Dr. Saurabh Mehta, introduced to the audience by IEEE Student member, Ms. Simran Vernekar. Dr. Saurabh Mehta, the speaker of the hour commenced the session by introducing to various wireless technologies. He mentioned that HAM radio is a licensed & private use of the radio bands. He made his session more interesting by making the audience identify various International as well as National Celebrities who used HAM technology.  Terminology used is HAM radio, known as HAM Lingo was creatively put up. Q – Codes, Phonetics, Frequency bands & various devices needed in HAM radio were discussed. He encouraged students to design their own device and be a part of HAM Fest, held every year in India.

 

Session 3 – Use of IOT & Remote Sensing in Agriculture

Speaker: Dr. Amiya Tripathy (Ph.D. IITB), Treasurer of IEEE GRSS Mumbai Chapter

The last session of the SKEP was delivered by Dr. Amiya Tripathy. He was introduced to the audience by an IEEE student member, Mr. Raviraj Bhagat.  Dr. Amiya Tripathy began with the session with basics of IOT, its evolution, applications, technologies, analytics & AI.  Various applications of IOT in agriculture like hydroponics, GIS with IOT, remote sensing with GIS in agriculture and drones of future in agriculture were discussed with the help of a video.

The SKEP sessions saw active participation of 88 students who got exposure to various research related topics. The Students had good learning experience showed active enthusiasm by interacting with the resource persons. To conclude, Prof. Yeshudas Muttu appreciated the efforts put by the students to organize this event and thanked each & every SKEP speaker for their valued presence at Don Bosco College of Engineering, Goa.
