Report on Two-Day Workshop on Latex
The Department of Science & Humanities of Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda organized a workshop on “LaTex” on February 25 & March 25, 2023. The aim was to provide hands-on practice to the first-year students on the aspects of doing technical documentation work on the open-source, scientific tool. Mrs. Vaishali Parakhi – Assistant Professor, Department of Science & Humanities, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda was the resource person for this workshop.
Students experienced hands-on practice learning sessions through which they got a better understanding of LaTex tool and its applications. The content delivery was as per the needs of every student along with interaction. As part of the practical session, Mrs. Vaishali explained LaTeX Basics and how one can write mathematical equations easily in LaTex. She explained in detail about the Basics of Equations, Math mode, Mathematical Symbols, Sample codes, Brackets and braces. She also explained how the sections, tables, Lists of Tables and Figures etc are created in LaTeX and how beamer can be used for preparing the power point presentation. Every student completed the assignment given on LaTeX on how to insert images, sub-images, equations, tables, and cross references in a technical document. Explanation and hands-on practice of Beamer which
is a powerful and flexible LaTeX class to create professional looking presentations was also covered. How to create hyperlinks in the document, and how to set up LaTeX documents to be viewed with a PDF-reader was described. 40 students took advantage of this workshop.
Towards the end of session, Dr. Kala Nayak, Head of Department of Science & Humanities motivated students to use LaTeX for their technical reports, resume writing etc. She also asked for feedback and suggestions on the workshop from students who conveyed a positive response.
