SE Civil Visit Water Supply Unit, Margao and Construction of IRMAO, Nuvem
A site visit to water supply unit at Margao and construction site, Nuvem was organized on 25th October 2024 for second year civil engineering students with Faculty in charges, Prof. Swaroopa Sail and Prof. Jonessa Ferrao. The water Treatment plant, located at Gogol Mutt, Margao, aims to provide safe, clean, and potable water to the residents of Margao and surroundings area. The Engineers in charge Er. Dipesh Gaude, WD IX, PWD, Er. Nikhil Karki and Er. Joao F. Dourado, AE explained about all the components related to water supply unit.
The water supply system from Selaulim Dam to Verna is 47 km long. It features two 1.4 m pipes and a 1 m pipe leading to a 1500 m³ sump. Three 450 mm suction pipes feed centrifugal pumps, discharging into a 500 mm pipe with necessary valves and a flow meter.
Water is supplied to a 10,000 m³ master balancing reservoir, with air vents to reduce corrosion from chlorine gases. Two distribution lines deliver water via a 600 mm pipe under gravity to Margao, Fatorda, and Raia.
The next visit was to construction site in Nuvem “IRMAO”, a project by Infratech Pvt. Ltd. Goa. The site visit, led by Engineers Mr. Aniket Dalvi and Mr. Akash Singh, highlighted construction activities across three blocks.
The first block, a residential and commercial building, is nearly finished and ready for occupancy. The second block, comprising four villas, is at the foundation stage, with site layout established using line dori, plum bob, and Pythagorean theory, followed by excavation and PCC placement.
In the third block, foundation work is complete, columns have been cast, and shuttering for the first floor is underway. Beam bottoms are fixed at specified heights as per consultant and architect drawings.
Materials used include concrete, steel, centering plates, wooden planks, and props, with strict safety measures and proper storage to minimize waste. The project remains on schedule, with satisfactory construction quality. Overall, the visit provided valuable insights for civil engineering students into real-world construction practices.
