Comp Field Trip

The C-CODES Student council has organized a field trip for the S.E. Computer students to Smartlink India Pvt. Limited at Verna Industrial estate and Infinyt3D at Verna Goa on October 12th, 2018. Around 63 students were present. The following Computer Engineering Dept. faculty accompanied the students on this field trip: Prof. Maria Christina Baretto, Prof. Mithil Parab and Prof. Priyanka Padiyar.

The students first visited Smartlink’s Telesmart, one of the prominent contract manufacturers of various structured cabling products in both copper and fiber range. The students were shown Face Plate assembly, Patch Panel assembly, which included the patch panels (loaded and unloaded), modules (soldered and solder less), surface mount box and support pins. Students were also shown working of the Shrinking machine, Keystone assembly and Packing. Later, students were taken to Smartlink’s Synegra, where they were shown the live process of PCB fabrication. Here, each step was explained in detail, which included Placing of IC components, soldering as well as Testing and Quality Assurance. They were encouraged to ask questions.

After lunch, students were taken to Infinyt3D which specializes solely in selling, manufacturing products, and organizing workshops on the production of 3D printed products. Students were shown how a prototype of product using 3D modeling software can be printed using plastics such as PLA which is biodegradable, but weaker and ABD-which is non-biodegradable but stronger. They were also shown the various pre-made 3D printed products. A live session of 3D printing was conducted which helped students understand 3D printing process, better.

The visit to these two places, were extremely beneficial to the students for understanding, and experiencing a live practical session of the processes of PCB fabrication, cabling and 3D printing. Overall, it was an enlightening learning experience for the students of SE Computer. Refreshments were provided to the students at the beginning and end of the journey. The coordinator for the field trip was Prof. Manisha Faldessai.
