VIDNYAN DHARA 2023 at Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda
As a part of Vidnyan Dhara 2023, the Goa State Higher Education Council and the Directorate of Higher Education in association with Science & Humanities Department and Civil Engineering Department of Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda organized an expert lecture on February 21, .
The resource person was Dr. Amit Kumar, Project Scientist, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Vasco, Goa.
The topic of the lecture was “Role of Seismology in the Earth Sciences”.
Dr. Kala Nayak, Registrar and Head of Department of Science & Humanities introduced and welcomed the speaker.
Referring to the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria, Dr. Amit said “Earthquakes cause immense loss of human life and property, and hence seismology, which is the study of earthquakes and seismic waves, can help in minimizing this loss”.
In his lecture, Dr. Amit explained the various types and causes of earthquakes and how these are studied using different techniques from various places on the earth. He also highlighted the studies done by NCPOR in the India Ocean using Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS).
Dr. Shwetha P., Head of Civil Engineering department proposed the vote of thanks.
The talk was attended by first and second year Civil Engineering students and faculty of the college.
