A session on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) was successfully conducted on 20th April 2026 for the students of Second Year (SE) Civil Engineering. The objective of the session was to enhance students’ awareness of workplace safety practices, hazard identification, and real-world safety management in engineering environments.

The session was delivered by Mr. Richie Baracho, Deputy Manager – Environment, Health & Safety at Berger Becker Coatings Pvt. Ltd., who brought valuable industry experience and practical insights to the discussion.

Mr. Baracho began by introducing the fundamental concepts of occupational safety, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a strong safety culture in industrial and construction settings. He explained key aspects such as hazard identification, risk assessment, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions, and the role of safety regulations in accident prevention. The importance of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety audits, and compliance with statutory norms was also discussed in detail.

He further elaborated on accident causation models, highlighting how systematic investigation and timely corrective actions can prevent the recurrence of incidents. The session also covered essential topics such as safety management systems, emergency preparedness, and the critical role engineers play in ensuring a safe working environment.

Interactive discussions encouraged students to think critically about safety challenges in civil engineering contexts, including construction sites, material handling, and equipment operation.

Overall, the session was highly informative and provided students with a clear understanding of the practical importance of occupational safety and health. It effectively bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry practices, preparing students to adopt safety-conscious approaches in their future professional careers.
