The Civil Engineering department of Don Bosco College of Engineering under Civil Engineering students Association (CESA) arranged a field trip for the Final year and Third Year Civil Engineering students on 05th & 15th March 2018 respectively to the National Highway project (NH 17-B) which is the missing link between Verna Industrial Estate and Loutolim, as part of their course in the subject of Ground Improvement Technique.

On reaching the site Mr. Ramesh Chavan the site Engineer from M/s M. Venkata Rao Infra Project  Pvt. Ltd. explained that the missing link falls in a very steep terrain with a level difference between Verna and Loutolim of almost 85m for a distance of 200m and by constructing this road Verna will be directly connected to Loutolim, reducing the distance by almost 6km.

Presently the students saw soil excavation being carried out based on the theory of slip circles. In order to stabilize the side slopes adjacent to the road, soil nailing is being carried out with soil nails successively varying from 2m to 10m from top to bottom of the hill along with geosynthetic materials followed by steel mesh, and finally to hold them altogether reinforced panels were fixed.

The students were accompanied by Dr. Shwetha P and Prof. Jeffrey Valadares on 05th March and Prof. Anirudha and Prof. Parashuram Hosamani on 15th March. A total of 60 students visited the site.
