  • formats

The Department of Electronics and Telecommunication organized its monthly Knowledge Sharing Session, under the R&D cell on  April 21, 2021 . The Knowledge Sharing Session initiative involves activities whose main motive is to update Faculty members with the latest trends in Technology and Research and to learn something beyond academics.

The session was taken up by Prof. Flavia Leitao on “Datasheet Study and RoHS Compliance”.

Prof. Flavia Leitao started her session on Datasheet study by taking the datasheet of Through Hole (TH) and Surface Mount (SM) Resistors, where she spoke about the different types of resistors and their different packages in detail. She highlighted the importance of understanding every character of the Part Numbering, when it comes to ordering the components. She explained the design aspects of the Tape and Reel package and the Jumper resistor.

Prof. Flavia Leitao then focused on the Pick and Place machine where she highlighted the various tasks carried out by the machine using an animated video. This gave the audience a visual perspective of the entire process. She then explained the Wave Soldering and Reflow Soldering methods for the TH and SM parts, respectively.

R&D Session

The second part of the session was on RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Compliance) Compliance. She explained the significance of this directive and told which are all the materials restricted under this directive.

She discussed why Lead was banned and how usage of Tin in place of Lead was advantageous as well as risky.

She spoke about Tin Whiskers as well and how it posed a threat to the Space and Military sector.

She mentioned the different Satellites which failed as a result of these Tin Whiskers.

In the end she wound up the session by talking about Mr. Stanislav Petrov, and how he saved the world from a potential Nuclear disaster in 1983.

The event was well appreciated and enjoyed by all the faculty members and applauded her for a very informative and interesting session.

The event was encouraged by R&D Chair Dr. Varsha Turkar and coordinated by Prof. Flavia Leitao. The session was indeed an interesting one and received good feedback from the audience.
