Seminar on “Nuclear Technology- Scripting National Development” & Exhibition on BARC Technologies” at Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda

The Media Awareness and Public Relation Section, Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) ,Mumbai in association with Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda organized a seminar on “Nuclear Technology : Scripting National Technology and Exhibition on “ BARC Technologies” on 3rd February 2018. The seminar and exhibition was attended by around 300 participants who included Engineering & Agricultural faculty, school teachers and students from across Goa. Students from 8 schools also visited the exhibition.

The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri K. Jayarajan, Outstanding Scientist & Chairman, Safety Council, BARC in presence of Shri. Fraddry D’Souza, Guest of Honor,  Area Convener of TERI, Shri R.K. Singh, Head, Media Awareness and Public Relation section, BARC, Mumbai, Rev. Fr. Paul D’Souza, Rector, Rev. Fr. Kinley D’Cruz, Director, Dr. Neena Panandikar, Principal, and Prof. Ajit Salunke, HOD (Mechanical) & Convener. The event was co-ordinated by Prof. Sharad Shanbhag. Prof. Avila Naik, Assistant TPO compered the inaugural function and Prof. Gaurang Patkar, HOD- Computer Engineering introduced the dignitaries.

Mr. Jayarajan in his keynote address explained the motto of BARC, “Atoms in the Service of the Nation” and covered areas like Radio isotopes and Handling, Electromagnetic spectrum, Radiation protection and applications in areas like Healthcare, Electricity, National security, Archeology, Food Processing etc. Mr. R.K Singh praised DBCE for imparting quality education and said that it was a privilege and honor to be in DBCE Campus. Fr. Kinley said that it was a privilege to be hosting a prestigious institution like BARC and lauded the extraordinary Vision of the Leaders and contribution of BARC to the Nation which has withstood the test of time. He further quoted the words Pandit Nehru during the inauguration of India’s 1st nuclear reactor where he said that the future of India will be shaped by the use atomic energy for peaceful purposes to emphasize the importance of atomic energy. Dr. Panandikar in her welcome address gave an overview of the exhibition and seminar, highlighted the achievements of the College in the last 6 years and hoped for a long term association between BARC and DBCE. Prof. Ajit Salunke proposed the vote of thanks.

Mr. Rahul Kalwat , Scientific Officer, BARC delivered a session on “Career Opportunities in BARC “ in which he gave an insight  into the selection criteria, training schools, schemes ,statistics of recruitment and structure of the course. Mr. R. K. Singh delivered a session on “Atomic Energy for Sustainable Development and Public Perception “  in which he spoke about the major challenges facing our country in areas of agriculture, medicine, national security, food processing etc. and how they can be solved via Atomic Energy.

The exhibition showcased various exhibits related to indigenous technologies developed by BARC including the nuclear reactor, Bhabhatron for cancer treatment, mutant seeds and crops, nuclear treatment of sewage waste, sterilization of medical equipment, Reverse Osmosis processes etc. It also had interactive videos highlighting the various achievements and milestones of BARC.
